Turn the iconic Ghibli characters into edible treats! Only four ingredients needed and they’re sooo fun to make.

Do you remember those cute fuzzy little black charcoal monsters in Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro? They’re called Susuwatari, or wandering soot, or soot spirits, kinda like “dust bunnies” in the English language. I’ve always wanted to turn them into a dessert and what better time to make them than in the month of Halloween!

These cute little mochi bites are as yummy as they’re adorable. They’re soft, tender, chewy, and stretchy, and sweetened to Chura Kokuto, Japanese unrefined black sugar, which gave them such a rich, umami, and complex sweet flavor! I used this Chura Kokuto by a small local company in Okinawa and the taste and quality are both perfection.

Ingredients
Method
- In a microwave safe bowl, whisk together glutinous rice flour, sugar, food grade charcoal, and soy milk, until very smooth and no lumps left;
- Cover with a cling wrap, poke a few holes in the wrap, and microwave on high for one minute;
- Check on it, stir the mixture, cover it back up and microwave on high for another minute;
- Check it, if it looks completely solidified then it’s ready, if not, microwave for another 30 seconds;
- If you don’t have a microwave, you can steam the mixture covered by cling wrap for 30 minutes;
- Let the cooked mixture slightly cool down, oil your hands or wear food prep gloves, start stretch and knead the dough, repeat stretching, folding, and kneading until you have a soft, smooth dough;
- Divid the dough into bite size pieces, I made about 30 grams each bite, roll each piece into a ball with your hands and slightly dust with toasted glutinous rice flour;
- Decorate with candy eyes and stars, serve chilled, enjoy!
