What’s better than crispy, fluffy, freshly prepared waffles? Heart-shaped waffles. And what’s even better than heart-shaped waffles? Tow-tone gingham design heart-shaped waffles!

Need a last minute gift for Valentine’s or Galentine’s Day? Make these exxxtra cute gingham heart waffles! You can customize the color patterns to your person’s preferences, or perhaps a special theme, or a holiday.

This waffle recipe works well with both regular all-purpose flour or 1:1 gluten-free flour, so you can easily adjust to your dietary needs. I didn’t add sugar or sweetener in the waffle batter as I persoanlly prefer them not to be too sweet, so I can add syrup, sprinkles, and other toppings when I eat them. But if you like sweet waffles, please feel free to sweeten the batter to your liking.

In order to create a pattern that’s neat and sharp, I made the batter slightly thinner than usual so you can draw the lines smoothly. Don’t worry though, the texture is still crispy on the outside, while fuffy and delightfully chewy ono the inside.

Vegan Gluten Free Gingham Heart Shaped Waffles

- Sift the flour and baking powder into a large mixing bowl;
- In a separate bowl, add the soy milk and apple cider vinegar, let it stand for one minute, the milk will slightly curdle and thicken, and this is to create our vegan “butter milk”;
- Add the oil, vanilla extract, and sweetener (if using) to the soy milk bowl, stir to combine, then slowly pour into the dry flour while mixing gently;
- Mix the batter till it’s just combined, do not overmix!! A few small lumps are ok;
- Pour a third of the batter into another bowl, color it red, and color the rest of the batter with pink, you can choose whatever colors you like;
- Transfer each color batter into a piping bag;
- Preheat your waffle iron. When it’s ready, brush the waffle iron with a little bit of oil, use the red batter to fill all the little grooves in the waffle iron, then flush fill on top with the pink batter;
- Close the waffle iron and let the batter cook, do not open until there’s no more steam coming out;
- Repeat to finish all the batter;
- Serve warm with your toppings of choice, enjoy!
